Jack Skellington

This piece is another blast from the past, pulled straight from that defining 2018 high school art show collection. As part of our massive studio wall layout, I wanted to experiment with a character that already thrived on sharp contrast and spooky charm. Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas was the ultimate candidate.

Because Jack's design is naturally minimalist, built on bold pinstripes and hollow black eyes; reimagining him entirely through thousands of tiny stippling dots was an awesome stylistic challenge. Hand-inked using a combination of fine-liners. I focused heavily on building intense ink density around his hollow eyes and bat-tie to create deep shadow valleys, while keeping his skull beautifully bright using lighter, more spaced-out dot clusters.

Roughly 8 hours of fast-paced ink sessions to make sure he was ready in time to join the rest of the classroom lineup on the showcase wall.

This drawing represents a fun detour into pop culture and character design during my early days of mastering the technique. It's a great reminder of just how versatile stippling can be, transforming a familiar animated figure into a highly textured, hand-crafted art piece.
