When a close mate's birthday caught me completely empty-handed, I turned to the studio table for an immediate solution. Knowing he lives for the beach and has spent half his life surfing, a raw, striking study of an apex predator was the ultimate choice. It was a fast-paced, highly focused project that let me capture the fierce, fluid power of marine life on a grand A3 scale.

The design zeroes in on a dramatic, open-jawed profile, allowing for a fantastic contrast between the smooth, sleek skin of the shark and the razor-sharp geometry of its teeth. Hand-inked on an A3 canvas. I utilized solid black fields along the top of the body to establish massive weight and shadow, transitioning into a fine, mist-like stipple gradient as it meets the stark white of its underbelly and the hollow cavern of its mouth.

Sharks don't have traditional scales—their skin is made of tiny, tooth-like structures called dermal denticles. Capturing that matte, sand-paper-like finish required keeping the dot work incredibly tight and uniform, ensuring the lighting felt natural but intense.

here is something special about gifting an artwork that directly connects to a friend's absolute favorite place on earth. Born out of a last-minute scramble, it ended up becoming one of my favorite high-contrast wildlife pieces in the entire print collection.
