Heavy

Shifting past days 7 and 8, day 9 of Inktober brought the prompt Heavy. I wanted to step away from physical mass or literal objects and explore an atmospheric, surreal concept instead. The result is a striking illustration of a dense raincloud centered around a massive, weeping eye, sending down a heavy sheets of vertical rainfall.

This drawing serves as a brilliant study of line control, using chaotic, organic texture for the cloud formation contrasted against perfectly straight, repetitive downward strokes for the downpour.

Hand-inked with a fine-liner. I focused the deepest ink densities within the iris and the shadowed folds of the eyelid to give the eye a powerful, sorrowful focal point. The single teardrop falling from the tear duct breaks up the symmetry perfectly.

Building a convincing cloud with stippling requires a lot of loose, curly layering to give it a puffed, three-dimensional look. I contrasted that completely by using a ruler to pull tight, dashed vertical lines for the rain, effectively mimicking the feeling of a sudden, heavy deluge catching the light as it falls.

Taking a conceptual prompt like Heavy and twisting it into a piece of surrealist, melancholic flash art shows just how much emotion you can pull out of simple black ink. It’s a standout piece from the daily run, capturing a distinct mood that really makes you pause
