Fish
Following the initial stretch of land predators and conceptual designs, this A3 piece represents a return to underwater life with an intricate study of a reef fish, specifically modeled after the heavy-set profile of a coral cod or grouper.
The composition positions the fish vertically, allowing for a detailed exploration of its unique camouflage markings and the varied geometry of its fins.
Hand-inked on an A3 canvas. I utilized solid black fields to form the organic, irregular spots across its body, ensuring they followed the natural curvature of the fish to create a sense of three-dimensional volume.
Aquatic life offers a completely different texture profile than land animals. Capturing the translucent, ribbed structure of the dorsal and pectoral fins required fine, parallel line-work, which stands out beautifully against the dense, uniform stippling used to shade the main torso.
This piece adds a fantastic layer of variety to the studio's marine collection. It shows how the same stippling and ink techniques used for large-scale beasts can be softened and structured to capture the organic, fluid patterns of ocean reef life.
