Marshmallow

Created in late 2018, this quirky little piece was inspired by a desire to step away from serious subjects and have some fun with character design. I wanted to capture a classic campfire moment, a marshmallow being toasted on a stick; but give it a cute, slightly surprised personality.

The melting form and the smoke trail rising from the top offered an awesome opportunity to experiment with fluid lines and negative space. Hand-inked with a deep, solid black background block to simulate a smoky backdrop, allowing the bright face of the marshmallow and the stark white ink gaps to instantly pop out.

This drawing holds a special place in the archive because it shows the playful side of my work. It’s a reminder that stippling doesn't always have to be about complex anatomy or realism; it can be used to bring simple, imaginative doodles to life with incredible depth and texture.
